Power up, power up. If January is any indication, 2014 is gonna be an amazing year for collaborations with more dynamic women artists. I’m so indebted to poet and visionary Marta Lucia Vargas (those are her sneakers) for setting the tone. And to vocalist Anqwenique Wingfield (pictured above at Pittsburgh’s 720 Cafe) for moving it forward.

Casey Droege. What can I say? She’s the crush that keeps on giving. In addition to being a gifted artist, she contributes greatly to the artistic community here in Pittsburgh. SIX x ATE is a great example of this. 6 artists + 1 chef = all good. On Saturday, August 17th, Casey took this show on the road and brought three Pittsburgh artists + three Cleveland artists together for another installment. The theme: symbiotic (each participant discusses his or her art making process in relation to the event theme). Casey’s invitation was a real blessing because it allowed me to “dig deeper” into my recent sound experiments in poetry. My residency at The Rose O’Neill Literary House (where I failed miserably, I might add) really prepared me for this event. So thank you (again) to the Rose O’Neill folks. Anyway, SIX x ATE gave me the opportunity to move from text to sound in a way that felt much more organic and “right.” You’ll have to read on to hear what I made. (more…)

On Saturday August 17th, MOCA Cleveland will present SIX x ATE: Symbiotic in conjunction with the current show Realization is Better than Anticipation. The event will bring Pittsburgh and Cleveland artists and art appreciators together at The Sculpture Center. From 6-9 pm we will hear from Cleveland artists: Christi Birchfield, Jimmy Kuehnle, Mark Maskovitz and Pittsburgh artists: Rafael Abreu-Canedo, Corey Escoto, and Yona Harvey. As always there will be delicious food, libations and wonderful conversation.
Food will be provided by Marlon Hopeton and MOCA will supply wine. IF you’re interested in bringing beer or other libations, please do so.
